Wood may be one of the oldest art materials, long used in African, and cultural artwork for centuries. Kehinde “Kay” Ogunnupe, a Nigerian born, Master Craftsman, has been creating custom wood pieces for over 18 years; from custom cabinet units to handcrafted wood accessories.

 

For him, woodworking has been a family tradition for generations. He first learned woodworking while watching his grandfather  and uncle create custom furniture pieces by hand. Although wood has become easier to manipulate in recent years thanks to digital tools,  manual skill, and craftsmanship remain a top priority for Kay.

“Wood working requires my full focus and attention to detail which gives me gratification. Often, as I build my work—it is not unusual for the wood to [refuse to] yield to something I am asking of it. The most satisfying part is to use my skills and experience along with raw materials to create products my customers truly appreciate"
